On Saturday, we hosted our first community farm event. Our goal was to bring friends and family together and give them a taste of farm life, so they could experience the joy of cultivating fresh food and making natural products, all while taking in the natural beauty of central California.
During the day, we planted a field of lavender; we picked olives and salt-cured them. We also made elderberry syrup and herbal smudge sticks with white sage and rosemary grown on the farm. And, in what turned out to be the highlight, we dyed fabrics using grapes, prickly pears, turmeric and walnuts.
Later that evening, we popped some popcorn and sat out on the lawn to watch the documentary “The Biggest Little Farm” together.
